RINALDO ZHOK – Liszt-Verdi: Complete Paraphrases and Free Transcriptions

Rigoletto – Il Trovatore – Aida – Don Carlo – Simon Boccanegra – I lombardi alla prima crociata – Ernani – Messa da Requiem

Rinaldo Zhok dedicates a disc honoring Verdi’s bicentenary with Liszt’s complete operatic transcriptions and paraphrases, which he brings together for the first time on CD in their entirety. Building on from Liszt adaptations, Rinaldo highlights what one might define the Verdian spirituality, projects the dramatic force of the personages of the arias, and creates a theater without words and without images, suggested only by the sounds of the piano. The resulting exchange is quite wonderful: Liszt giving Verdi his hands, Verdi giving Liszt his voice.

Booklet in English, German and Spanish.
Program notes by Joanna Wyld.

Reviews

“The Italian elicits from the piano beautiful singing tones, shaping every phrase of every piece with care – and communicating with unfailing intensity.”
The Sunday Times – Stephen Pettitt / 9 March 2014

“Italian pianist Rinaldo Zhok’s first recording for Odradek features Liszt’s complete Verdi operatic transcriptions and paraphrases. An auspicious beginning.”
The Northern Echo – Gavin Engelbrecht / 27 March 2014

PERFORMANCE ****
RECORDING *****
“… breathes quality in every department… with technical command to spare… Zhok excels…”
BBC Music Magazine

“The emotion of the music passes from the soul of Verdi, through the mind of Liszt, to the hands of Mr. Zhok… This is a special disc, and the performances on it declare that Rinaldo Zhok is a special pianist.”
Voix Des Arts – Andrew Newsome / 10 April 2014

“… uniformly excellent recital… It is greatly to the credit of Rinaldo Zhok… that he is able to create such a luminous singing tone… The vocal origins of the music [are] always uppermost and the performances more deeply satisfying than many as a result.”
Gramophone – Jeremy Nicholas / June 2014

“Zhok is able to handle all technical hurdles with surety and style… Zhok achieves a perfect blend of Lisztian rhetoric with Verdi’s stirring material.”
American Record Guide – Becker / July-August 2014

“Rinaldo Zhok’s (born 1980 in Trieste) playing is striking and exerts a grandeur that is seldom heard in these works… an almost sculptural power.”
Pizzicato – Remy Franck / 13 October 2014

“Rinaldo Zhok brings the necessary assets together: an intimate knowledge of Verdi’s style and language, a sense of rhythmic tension, the seduction of the cantabile, the Italian sensuality.”
Falcinelli.org / February 2015
